Aluminium, wood, plexiglass: which support to choose for your wall art?

The support changes everything: colour depth, perceived material, longevity. Here's how to choose.

Three print supports side by side

Choosing a support is choosing a material. The same image file rendered on canvas, wood or plexi produces three different artworks. This guide helps match the image to the matter.

1. Canvas — the great classic

Cotton stretched on a wood frame, canvas remains the most versatile and best-selling support. Its matte surface doesn't reflect light, its natural grain ennobles every image. It supports very large formats (up to 120×180 cm) without distortion.

Best for: painting reproductions, landscapes, portraits, abstract art, matte-dominant photography, very bright living rooms where no reflection is wanted.

See our canvas prints collection.

2. Solid wood — warmth and grain

Direct printing on solid wood panel (PEFC, 9 mm, matte finish). The wood grain shows through the lighter areas of the image, adding lively texture to the print.

Best for: warm portraits, golden landscapes, ochre-dominant illustrations, wildlife, cartography. Avoid for high-contrast or vivid colours — the wood effect fades.

See our wood prints collection.

3. Plexiglass — colour depth

Printing under 4 mm acrylic, gloss finish. Plexi makes colours shine: blacks become deep, colours gain intensity. "Contemporary art gallery" effect.

Best for: pop art, high-definition photography, vector illustrations with bright flat tones, digital art, saturated anime. Avoid for matter-rich works (impasto loses all texture) and rooms facing a window (reflections).

See our plexiglass prints collection.

4. Aluminium dibond — for purists

Aluminium isn't (yet) in our catalogue, but deserves a mention. 3 mm aluminium plate, matte or satin surface, hyper-resistant. The professional photographer's support for archival qualities.

5. Art poster — accessible and free

Matte 250 g/m² paper, A3 to A1 format. The least-engaging support: frame whenever you want, replace whenever you wish. Indispensable for composing a multi-visual wall on budget.

One artwork, a matching bed

For a coherent bedroom, the artwork above the bed dialogues with the textile. The duvet covers from our sister house Royaume des Rêves revisit the same universes: Japan, Gamer, Basket, Moto, Animals, Horse. A trick to push the staging all the way.
